Joining Sigma Xi — Student Information

Students are welcome to join the U of T Chapter of Sigma Xi and participate in chapter activities and events. Sigma Xi is an international honor society dedicated to the encouragement of research in the pure and applied sciences through outstanding programs and services delivered in a collegial and supportive environment. Benefits of membership include:

• Increased Access to Research Funding: Through Grants-in-Aid of Research Program. (Members receive priority consideration).
• American Scientist Magazine: Complimentary subscription with membership. Information on the magazine is available here.
• Regular Electronic Communications: Providing information about employment, research funding and more.
• Conferences and Symposia: Recent conference topics have explored topics such as Education Reform, Ethics, Science and the Arts, and Science in Developing Countries. A growing national undergraduate research symposium takes place concurrently with Sigma Xi annual conferences.

Student Membership

Student membership is available to any full-time, degree-seeking student at an institution of higher learning.

Membership in Sigma Xi is by nomination; that is, the completed application form must include the names of two Full Members of Sigma Xi who act as nominators. To locate a Full Member in the U of T chapter, contact any chapter officer.

Students do not have to provide any additional information (like a résumé or a CV) with their application

Membership Dues and Fees

To maintain active membership in Sigma Xi, you must pay certain fees and annual dues. An up-to-date schedule can be found on the Sigma Xi website.

There is also small annual chapter dues to defray the cost of U of T chapter expenses.

Sigma Xi headquarters collects the appropriate dues and fees. There are several payment options. See their website for details.

The membership period is July 1 to June 30 of each year.
